Professional Requirements for a Music Therapist:
- Holds a Bachelor's degree or higher in Music Therapy from an American Music
Therapy Association approved college or university
- The Bachelor's degree curriculum concentrates in three areas:
1) Clinical Foundations
2) Musical Foundations
3) Music Therapy Foundations
- A music therapist must have completed 1200 hours of clinical training, including
a supervised internship.
- Upon completion of a Bachelor's degree, music therapists are eligible to sit for
the National Board Certification exam to obtain the credential, MT-BC.
- Music Therapists must keep their board certification current every five years
through continuing education or by taking the national exam again.
- Music Therapists adhere to standards of clinical practice and to a code of ethics
outlined by The American Music Therapy Association.
